Given some of the power-users on that forum I wouldn't want to say the couldn't! Also, many of them used SS Lite. If you frequent the Finale forum there are a lot of users who think they can re-enter the score directly into Finale quicker than scanning and correcting. Is your Les Miserables score a nice machine produced score following common consumer music practices? I have seen some that used lots of shortcuts that only an experienced player would understand, had paper cuts and pastes, and lots of hand-written edits. The use of even machine produced jazz style fonts reduces accuracy. The cleaner and sharper the original the better. Maybe the PDF to TIF conversion lets you set a resolution? Going the other way from too low to high - ? If you rescan manually you can knock the resolution down if it is too high. If your PDFs have significantly different resolution it can have an effect. More resolution is not necessarily better. This is why I think you should download the trial and see how it works. Sometimes a slight change in scan resolution can make a significant difference in the error rate. Scanning is not something that I would ever discuss in absolutes. There is a "Transfer to Finale" or something like that but it only starts up the Finale on your computer and gives it the XML file - the same as starting Finale yourself and opening the XML file. Some versions ago, SmartScore produced a Finale file for interchange but that no longer esists. PDFtoMusic Pro produces output in XML and the current version of SmartScore now uses XML as the interchange format as well. There is a trial that will convert only one page at a time it is not time limited. PDFtoMusic Pro is a completely different product. Will that help versus scanning all the pages manually? I've gotten use to the Finale interface now, so learning something new might not be 100% proficient.Īll in all, is it worth purchasing SS X2 Pro?Īnother thing to note is that I already converted my PDF to a TIFF file, so it was a clean copy. The score I'm transferring is Les Miserables and I need to cut down a few parts (i.e. I do plan on editing whatever errors occur. Is the PDFtoMusic Pro another prduct completely or is that also Musitek? And if it produces and XML then that is alright as well, but I would definitely prefer just having something that can very easily transfer to Finale (and I know SS X2 Pro will). This program will not recognize embedded scans in the PDF which is what SS does.Īre you planning to edit the raw recognized scores in Finale? I admit I am not a strong Finale user but I consider the SS interface superior for correcting scans than Finale's which is better for entry. If the PDFs were directly created by another music notation program then you are better off starting with PDFtoMusic Pro which will produce an XML file. The PDFs were likely derived from scans so you somewhat inherit the scanning parameters that were used which can influence recognition. However, they released a couple of updates and I now think it is a bit better for some elements. When SS PROX2 came out I would agree with Stevej2 that its recognition was not better than the previous version. What about downloading the free trial version and just doing it? You won't be able to save anything but it will give you an idea what you are up against. I was hoping Agorante would see your post since he was worked on large opera scores. I'm fine with correcting the errors, but I only have SS Lite and this score has 23 staves (SS Lite only does scores with up to 16 staves). The number of errors you get after the "recognize scan" phase will be pretty representative of what you'll get with SS X2 Pro. You said "upgrade" - if you have the previous version of SS Pro, try scanning a few pages of your score. It's less an issue of how long SS will take than how long it will take you to correct the errors SS makes during recognition. It is about 100MB I am thinking of upgrading to SmartScore X2 Pro Edition, because I have a 934 page score (that is currently a PDF) that I want to convert into a Finale document.
